We recognise that heat exchange performance depends on the technology used. DENSO’s advanced heat exchange ranges therefore include both braze welding and mechanical deformation technologies to provide the ideal solution for every vehicle. Braze welding produces a ‘closer’ contact between tube and fin, and guarantees more efficient heat transmission. Mechanical deformation technology – where the tube is ‘pressed’ against the fin – offers slightly less contact, but with the advantage of lower cost. Every DENSO Radiator is especially developed for the car and engine they are to be fitted to, and rigorously tested; so efficient performance is guaranteed. A DENSO Radiator with a 0.2 sq.m front surface, for example, features more than 6 sq.m of cooling surface on its fins.

Controlling the heat

When a car engine is running, whether diesel or petrol, not all the energy contained in the fuel is turned into power that will make the vehicle move. Depending on the engine speed and running conditions, around 30% of the energy released during combustion of fuel is converted into heat. If this heat is not controlled (or reduced) the engine temperature will increase too much, causing damage to the engine or reducing performance. The principal components of the engine cooling system take the energy that is not converted into power to move the vehicle, and dispose of it into the atmosphere.
