Stay Cool and Drive Smart: Expert Air Conditioning Advice from DENSO
Why AC Advice Matters
Offering free, impartial advice is one of the best ways for workshops to build trust and credibility with their customers. And when it comes to AC systems, a few simple tips can make a big difference in comfort, efficiency, and long-term performance.
Manual vs. Automatic: Know Your System
The first step is identifying the type of AC system in the vehicle—manual or automatic climate control.
- Manual AC requires the driver to adjust temperature, airflow direction, and blower speed manually.
- Automatic climate control allows the driver to set a desired temperature, and the system automatically adjusts to maintain it, compensating for external changes.
Regardless of the type, both systems benefit from a few universal best practices.
Smart Cooling Starts Before You Drive
To reduce the strain on the AC system, park in the shade or leave windows slightly open to prevent heat buildup. When starting the car, avoid turning the AC to maximum and letting the engine idle to cool the cabin. Instead, open all windows to release hot air, then switch on the AC once driving. Close the front windows first to push out remaining heat, followed by the rear ones.
Let the System Work Efficiently
Automatic systems often start gently and ramp up cooling gradually. Mimicking this behavior with manual A - starting with moderate settings - can improve efficiency and comfort. Set the temperature to a sensible level, like 20°C, rather than trying to turn your car into a fridge.
Start-Stop Systems and AC Performance
Vehicles with start-stop technology may experience reduced AC performance when the engine shuts off, as the compressor stops running. In heavy traffic or extreme heat, consider overriding the start-stop function to keep the AC running continuously. Also, use the recirculation mode to cool already-conditioned cabin air instead of drawing in hot air from outside.
Avoid Unpleasant Odours
To prevent mould buildup on the evaporator - which can cause bad smells - turn off the AC a few minutes before reaching your destination, but leave the blower running. This helps dry out the system and keeps it fresh.
AC Isn’t Just for Summer
Many drivers think AC is only useful in hot weather, but it’s also effective in cold or damp conditions. The AC process dries incoming air, making it ideal for clearing fogged windows. Just remember: always switch off the AC (not the blower) before turning off the engine.
Build Trust with Every Tip
By sharing these insights, workshops not only help customers stay comfortable year-round but also position themselves as trusted experts when it’s time for AC maintenance or repairs.
